The arrival of network functions virtualization (NFV) is transforming the way services are designed and delivered by increasing the agility and flexibility of networks through the use of software.

As service providers virtualize their network functions to reduce costs and increase scalability, much of the discussion in the industry has revolved around how to instantiate a VNF or make it a part of a service. But a key piece of the NFV puzzle which needs to be addressed is the ability to monitor the performance of a virtual network function in order to manage it and make sure that it is performing adequately.
